A randomized, controlled trial examining treatment options for carpal tunnel syndrome, now published in the Lancet,1 is an important addition to the medical literature. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a progressive condition caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, which leads to pain and loss of function in the hand. Previous studies have suggested that surgery is the best treatment option for patients with carpal tunnel syndrome, but these studies lacked the careful methodology used by Jarvik et al.,1,2 and they did not adequately address the efficacy of multimodal nonsurgical approaches.3,4
