Implementation Scientist, Tenure or Clinician-Educator Track, Associate or Full Professor, General Pediatrics

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Department of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seek candidates for an Associate or Full Professor position in either the non-tenure clinician educator track or the tenure track. Expertise is required in the specific area of implementation science with a strong record of academic achievement to build a leading program in pediatric implementation science within CHOP’s Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness (CPCE). The opportunities for implementation science within CHOP and building upon the CPCE portfolio are vast. Within CPCE, investigators play leading roles in many regional, national and international networks focused on improving child health care and health. Building upon health system and community partnerships and using a variety of successful informatics approaches, the Center has a variety of resources that have proven effective in translating research into practice. These tools and connections provide a foundation for advancing implementation science methods and the well-being of children. PhD, DrPH, MD or additional degree in epidemiology, health services research, public health or a related field is required.

CHOP was founded in 1855 and is the nation’s oldest hospital dedicated solely to the care of children. Home to the Department of Pediatrics for the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, CHOP is consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals in the country in the U.S. News and World Report’s Honor Roll of the nation’s Best Children’s Hospitals. The CHOP health system includes community hospitals, outpatient specialty and primary care facilities, and a major tertiary care and referral center for the greater Delaware Valley area, with an estimated population of 10 million, offering a tremendous opportunity for building a natural laboratory in which to answer implementation science related questions. Annually, CHOP receives nearly 30,000 inpatient admissions in its 590-bed Main Building, more than 90,000 emergency room visits, and approximately 1.24 million outpatient visits. CHOP’s Healthcare Network includes over 50 locations. CHOP is also invested in improving well-being in the surrounding community.

The Department of Pediatrics at CHOP/University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine is the largest Department in the Hospital and is organized into Divisions representing the major subspecialties: Adolescent Medicine, Allergy/Immunology, Cardiology, Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology/Hepatology/Nutrition, General Pediatrics, Hematology, Human Genetics, Infectious Diseases, Neonatology, Nephrology, Oncology, Pulmonary Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, and Rheumatology. The Department stands among the premier academic pediatric departments in the country, with its already wide and still growing clinical network and increasing number of faculty conducting basic and clinical research. CHOP’s Pediatric Department has been named best in the U.S. by U.S. News & World Report for 2020 for the seventh year in a row.

With approximately 70 faculty from across pediatric disciplines and a large and diverse portfolio of primarily NIH-funded research, the CPCE is a Center of Emphasis within the CHOP Research Institute led by Director Alexander Fiks, MD, MSCE and Associate Director Jeffrey Gerber, MD, PhD, MSCE. The CPCE’s mission is to discover and spread knowledge about best practices in pediatric care by facilitating, organizing and centralizing the performance of clinical effectiveness research, the mentoring of fellows and faculty in clinical effectiveness research, and the dissemination and implementation of research findings. In 2020, CPCE developed a strategic plan that renews its commitment to creating, translating, and broadly disseminating foundational evidence for patient and population interventions that optimally improve health and health care for children. Research has now been organized into methodological themes to optimize faculty support: implementation science, mixed-methods, clinical epidemiology, comparative effectiveness, clinical trials, and biostatistics. Strategic initiatives also include leveraging internal programs to increase clinical enterprise impact.

Teaching responsibilities may include teaching and/or mentoring of medical students at the Perelman School of Medicine as well as residents or fellows at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Teaching may also include education and mentoring of faculty in implementation science.

Clinical responsibilities may include inpatient and/or outpatient clinical services in the candidate’s sub-specialty, including supervision of residents and fellows (if applicable).

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include leading a collaborative program in pediatric implementation science with CPCE, its accomplished faculty, and the broader research community at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates are expected to have a track record of extramural research grant funding and have national or international recognition as experts in their field.

The successful candidate is expected to have the interest and ability to work both independently and as part of a broader research Center and community. The expectation is that the faculty person would maintain a strong affiliation with the Penn Implementation Science Center at the Leonard Davis Institute (PISCE@LDI) at the University of Pennsylvania.
