Research Associate in BiosensorsStarting from £34,304, rising to £40,927 per annumRef: CF8862This exciting Research Associate opportunity is one of several research positions within the EPSRC-funded project ‘Development of an on-demand sensor and monitoring technology based on switchable nanobodies for cell therapy bioprocessing’ involving the Universities of Birmingham, Bath and Aston.About the project:This project will develop an on-demand sensor and monitoring technology that will enable, for the first time, real-time, non-disruptive measurement of key biochemicals in cell culture media. These unprecedented capabilities will be enabled by an innovative microfluidic sensing platform comprising smart, switchable electrode-tethered nanobodies. In contrast with conventional offline analysis, the acquisition of real-time process data will allow immediate response to process variations, thus providing a fine level of process control. This is essential for the consistent production of high-quality therapeutic cells in high yields, independently of the patient’s or donor’s cells. It will provide an exceptional opportunity to implement fully automated, robust cell therapy culture processes and bring down production costs, ultimately delivering cost-effective and impactful therapeutics to patients in need.About the role:For this position, the Research Associate will develop arrays of electrochemical impedance biosensors, which will then be integrated into a microfluidic device coupled to a bioreactor. The sensors will involve the use of electrically switchable nanobodies to detect different analytes in bioreactor cell cultures. The role is fixed term starting 1 April 2022 for an expected duration of 18 months.About you:Our ideal candidate should have experience in electrochemical impedance biosensors and in optimisation of surface bio-immobilisation processes. Experience with microfluidics and, in particular, microfabrication is highly desirable.Further information:The Centre for Biosensors, Bioelectronics and Biodevices (C3Bio) based at the University of Bath brings together researchers from engineering, physical, life and social sciences working on different aspects of biosensors (sensing elements and techniques), bioelectronics (electrophysiology and bioelectronic circuits) and biodevices (device co-design and integration). We are bridging the gap between the different disciplines to develop technologies that address clinical, environmental and industrial needs. With 46 academics as C3Bio core or affiliated members plus circa 40 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, C3Bio is the largest UK centre in this area. The C3Bio laboratories in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering are fully equipped with chemical preparation, microfabrication, electrochemistry suite, microfluidic testing and electronic design and characterization facilities. We have access to a wide range of facilities and expertise across campus such as nanofabrication, imaging and material & chemical characterization facilities. What we can offer you:Our campus is surrounded by beautiful countryside, and the City of Bath with its historic charm and social activity only a short distance away creates an excellent environment in which to work. We are:• a family friendly workplace • open to exploring flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the University. • recognising of the talents of our diverse workforce through an excellent reward package • encouraging of your personal and professional developmentFind out from our staff what makes the University of Bath a great place to work.
