Structurally embedded in the Technical University and the Helmholtz Center Munich, theconducts immunological basic research with the clear scope of clinical application. We profit from the clinical input and material transfer provided by the clinics of the Technical University, as well as from an environment of cutting-edge technology and diverse experimental platforms provided by the Helmholtz Center. Theis conducting basic research with a focus on the elucidation of immunological tolerance mechanisms in various settings. A particular interest of the lab is the gastronintestinal immune system and the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the host immune system, namely how immunological tolerance at mucosal barrier organs towards harmless microbes or allergens is established and maintained and the consequences of a loss of this tolerance for different diseases.
